Halloween, one of the world’s oldest holidays, is still celebrated today in several countries around the globe. In the United Kingdom, they celebrate Halloween with a British twist. In Mexico, Latin America, and Spain, All Souls’ Day, is their Halloween. In Ireland and Canada, Halloween, which was once a frightening and superstitions time of the year, is celebrated like in the United States with trick-or-treating, costume parties, and is fun for all ages. The word Halloween comes from All Hallows Eve.
Did You Know…?
- A traditional food eaten on Halloween is barnbrack, a kind of fruitcake that can baked at home or brought from stores.
- Some other names for Halloween are All Hallows Eve, Samhain, and All Hallowtide.
- Halloween is correctly spelt Hallowe’en.
- A pumpkin is really a squash, and it comes from the same family as a cucumber.
- Black cats were originally believed to protect witches’ powers from negative forces.
